#38717 The 0 Ohm resistor is a bypass for the SOT-89 voltage regulator. Some boards come with a higher resistance, which I've just left in place. I've soldered in an HT7333 linear regulator and removed the 0 Ohm resistor. Works fine from a 5V supply now. I soldered a 22uF tantalum cap across the regulator's Vin and GND lines. Not sure if the ESP8266 module has input decoupling capacitors (eliminating the need for a tantalum cap across Vout and GND), but it should.

They are wide, but you can pre-wire the breadboard and put the adapter plate on top. Like so:
