Just fiy-I bought the cheapest diy powerbank enclosures on ebay and they are perfect for some project enclosures with 18650 cells from old laptop batteries-attached picture with arduino mini clone from china and esp8266 module for size comparison. The enclosures were around 2$ each

Nice idea! Do you have a link to the auction? I have an eBay powerbank kit, but it is not as suitable.

Just an update, I bought three of these enclosures. I would not recommend them because 2 out of 3 came with defective micro usb connectors. They do work if you apply pressure to the cable. Being a maker I took the two defective ones apart, and it is very clear that there is insufficient solder on the joints/pins of the micro usb connector. The pitch is so fine, it was impossible for me to fix the connection. I guess if you have a SMD rework station and a microscope it would be possible to fix. Don't buy.
