still getting fatal exception (0)

After much hacking and banging my head on my keyboard I am at a loss as to why I'm still getting 'fatal exception (0)' errors on boot.
I'd been led to believe this error was power supply rated, if it wasn't supply enough amperage it'd fail to boot. But after 3 iterations on a power
supply I think I can confidently say my supply is sufficient. The latest iteration is a 5v 850mA wall wart connected to an LM317 outputting around 3.6v.
My next thought was something to do with how my FTDI is connect is interrupting the power supply. With a supply described as above, how would I
connect my FTDI? I'm using a Sparkfun FTDI explorer for my USB/FTDI. I have TX/RX connect as you'd expect, and GND connected between the
two components, makes sense, yeah?
At a frustrating loss as where to head (especially after I got SPI working!!!!!!) next.
