ESP12 - LED indication of AP Tx/Rx communication activity?

I have nearly completed a project using the ESP12 which is set up in AP mode and basically transmits the values from various external temperature sensors: DHT22's and NTC thermistors to a indoor client ESP, when requested at about 3sec intervals. On the AP side to finish things I would like an LED indication of activity of client requests or AP responses (flickering LED) but cant see how the WiFi class object can provide me with access to what is happening at essentially 'transport level' in the OSI model. This LED, and the Power led will be the only indicators on the environmentally sealed electronics housing. Will be great to have your thoughts.
