Running Standalone ESP-12E?

What is the minimum hardware requirement for a standalone ESP-12E (apart from power circuitry) to get serial output? Can I just hook up my FTDI USB-Serial converter to the RX/TX pins of the module or do I need to use some certain configuration resistors as well?
