Timer usage

I am used to using timers on AVRs and am just starting with the Esp8266. I read the technical document but I am looking for additional information. Is there a reference with more information about the timers or could someone briefly explain the timers on the Esp8266, what they normally have to do, what about them can be changed and do they have any features like the AVR timers usually have?
