Spansion flash support

I've bought an Olimex ESP8266-DEV and changed the flash from the standard 2MB to a Spansion 16MB one (http://www.spansion.com/Support/Datashe ... 56S_00.pdf).
After some application download, the flash is bricked: the communication with the ESP8266 (i.e. mac address get) works fine, but when i try to read/write to the flash i get the "Invalid head of packet" error.
Somebody have idea of what's happening?
I've read that 4MB+ of flash isn't still well supported by the flash tool, but i shouldn't be able to read some sector, not the entire flash, should i?
Why i was able to upload some application before the flash bricked??
