ESP01 gets very hot when connected to battery

I'm working with some ESP01 modules. Connected to my Bus Pirate, I can interact with them, but it does not appear to supply enough power to handle flashing new firmware. Chips barely get warm.

I connected the ESP to a 2xAA battery pack and noticed that the main chip on the board got hot very quickly.

Any ideas?

You might want to limit the current to the module by using a resistor between vcc and the battery+.

I can do that, of course, but why is the IC drawing that much current?

Describe exactly what each pin is connected to.
