Using a cheap W5100 module.

I have a W5100 module from ebay, I got it working on an Arduino Uno, so know it's good. But on ESP, using standard the H/W SPI conns, isn't working.. Seems intermittent, returning incorrect values for the IP address set, and stack trace failiures depending on the example sketch I load.
Anyone got it working?
