Is ESP8266 capable of being microcontroller for epaper display to just flash static images.

We specifically looking for ESP8266 to drive http://www.buy-lcd.com/index.php?route= ... t_id=12582
The pin layout is available on that link in the pdf : GDE080A1 Specification

Looking to use this display connected via ESP8266 over wifi.

You might want to have a look at this project by Sprite_tm: http://spritesmods.com/?art=einkdisplay
It's using a different display, but the hardware should work. For the software to work, you probably need to write your own driver for your paticular display.

I found this blog post that looks pretty cool: http://blog.tindie.com/2017/05/e-paper-iot-door-sign/ . You can even buy the fully assembled product!

Unfortunately, there is no way to update the display wireless. Has anyone created an epaper CRM?
