Basic Components required to properly run an esp8266 chip

All the currently available ESP8266 boards (esp-01 to esp-12) seem to contain the esp8266ex chip, along with an 8-pin IC that is connected to it. I've looked around, but can't figure out what that board is, or what it's used for. Can anyone give me some pointers?

Strange, normally one can easily read the markings on this chip. You are probably looking at the flash memory, an SPI device.

The second link you've provided is not a SPI Flash chip, it is a SPI FRAM chip, completely different things.
