GPIO I/O and transistor for RGB LED Strip

i was just wondering if i could drive a BC337 with the 3.3v and 12 mA output of a ESP8266 gpio pin.
Is that the right transistor? which base resistor i should use to limit base current?
Anyone tried to control a RGB led strip?
