Which batteries are suitable to power ESP8266?

The batteries should be able to support a peak current of around 300mA, if I am not wrong. Which batteries are suitable for this? What battery specs should I look out for besides voltage and battery capacity?

I am interested in alkaline batteries and non-rechargeable lithium batteries.

You can use 4 aa batteries. A 9 volt battery gets drained too fast.

Why 4? Wouldn't 2 AA batteries be enough? 2AA gives 3V, then use boost regulator to boost to 3.3V.

If use 4 batteries, how would you arrange the batteries? In series or parallel or both?

Why to not use a Li-Ion rechargeable cell ? 18650 for example, as very easy to find.
Can give you more juice than standard AA/AAA batteries for a longer period of time and are also "ECO Friendly" as rechargeable :)
