NodeMCU dev kit not detected by Linux

I have plugged my device into a Linux computer via the usb. It has powered on, as evidenced by a flashing blue led. But the Linux computer did not detect the device on its usb ports. I ran lsusb and nothing new appeared.

This is my first ESP8266 device so I am not sure what I am doing (have done a bit with Arduino and raw Atmel chips) and I would sure appreciate some help.

I would have expected the device to be listed by lsusb, even if I needed a driver installation (which apparently I don't for Linux). I use Arduinos with CH340 chips without issues.

Thanks for any help that you can offer.

Please ignore this. I thought I was out of troubleshooting options. Well, I was. Except to swap out the brand new usb cable.

With a cable that adheres to the usb standard in that it conducts electricity from one end to the other, I am now experiencing what I expected to experience.
