This project is not clear to understand. The flash has been removed so any ESP firmware must come from the Raspberry. I'm not sure how they get it functional, maybe using custom firmware, although the idea is interesting.

Reading the writeup, the pi is effectively playing the role of flash for the esp, using the SD protocol (SDIO). So the esp bootup gets the data from the pi. Looks like a fun project.

Yes, I've understood that ESP firmware is loaded on the fly by Rapsberry.
The question I've is what it that firmware ?
according to the post, the github project point to binaries that are more than 1 year old.
And I don't see any sources from those binaries ...
Are they copies from some AT firmwares ?
It is all uncleared ...
