WiFi AP multiple clients

I am using several ESP8266 modules for my project, one configured as WiFi access point and the others shall connect to this one. I have learnt that the AP only supports the connection of 4 clients at a time, is that correct? Is there any possibility of connecting more than 4 modules without having to change the firmware?
