Reset pulled low on serial monitor

Hello all,
I'm currently using a CP2102 based usb to serial adapter to program my esp12 dev board.
Currently it programs fine, but if I leave dtr connected to reset, when I open serial monitor in arduino to talk to it dtr goes low and puts the esp into reset. Is this normal? Is there a way I can avoid this? Ideally I don't want to have to plug ad unplug lines to switch between programming and communicating.
I'm currently designing my own pcb that the esp07 is attached to, so if its a hardware mod I'm able to do that.
Cheers
Sol
