Hi,

I have an esp8266mod with ai-thinker branding on it. I think its might be the esp12 however it doesnt have the ch-pd pin on it. I have tried just about everything to get in into programming mode and i cant seem to get the pi to read it . I have checked various forums and made the modification necessary to the raspberry pi 3 for the uart console but when i read minicom i cant type anything. It simply seems dead. Any ideas how to get it into programming mode. Please let me know if you need more info. thanks

If it is normal ESP12, some silkscreens have CH_PD labelled as EN.

i do see the en pin. I hooked it up to vcc but the module still has the red led on. Is that normal or is it supposed to change colors as it seems to have other leds onboard. thanks

Plain ESP12s have only one Blue LED. So maybe you should share a picture of your board. The Red LED of yours is probably a power LED.

Beware that any ESP need not only CH_PD/EN to be pulled up, but also GPIO2/GPIO0 and RES. And GPIO15 needs to be pulled down.
