ESP8285 is a new version of ESP8266 with 1Mbyte onboard flash. Maybe other changes?

Sadly, the embedded flash still uses the SPI port so pins 6 - 11 are still not free to use as GPIO pins. This otherwise would have been a great boon to those using this chipset for development since the ESP8266 is relatively GPIO poor compared to others out there. Still, the ESP8285 will be useful for very small applications like hand-held controllers and other wearables. price from Espressif is only $1.10 compared to $1 for the ESP8266, so the embedded 1 Mbyte of flash saves space at the cost of 10 cents per chip, which is still a lot less than what anyone would pay for an external flash for all but the highest volumes. Another useful addition to the ESP family IMHO.

One interesting detail I would like to know is whether this internal flash can be write protected.
