Dead board or am I not doing something?

Hi,
First time post. I bought a esp8266 off of amazon. Specifically, HiLetgo New Version NodeMCU LUA WiFi Internet ESP8266 Development Board. Link: http://www.amazon.com/HiLetgo-Version-N ... ge_o00_s00

When I plug it into my windows 7 machine via a micro-usb cord, the blue led flashes twice but that is it. It is not showing up in device manager for me to apply a driver to. I tried re-scanning for hardware changes but no luck. I also tried it on my windows 8 desktop and it did not show up there.

Is there another step I should be doing? I'm ordering another usb cord to see if that could be the problem. Any other thoughts?

Thanks!
:)

I had the same problem with similar boards. Power it externally via VIN/GND pins.

The board is using the CP2102. Did you install the driver for it? And, did you install the board manager for ESP8266 in your Arduino IDE for the compilation?
