connect (open)

But it complains unable to open serial port

You seems to be on Linux, check the permission of the port, especially the group, probably 'dialout', maybe you are not member of that group.

OK, after some tweaking it finally outputted something.
Is that from the CP210X or ESP8266 module?

so what should I try next.

My ESP-01 baud rate is 115200.
