Does the ESP8266 can be used with external antennas? I would like to use a directional antenna to increase its gain and distance for reception (Line of Sight).

Hi,
You can get an esp8266-07 which has an external antenna connection.
Other suggest that you can cut the onboard antenna (on very specific places) and replace it with your own antenna, but I have not ventured that road myself.

I agree with Tony. I have an ESP-05 and ESP-07. These both come with a connector for external antenna. The ESP-07 also has a ceramic antenna built in, so you can get decent performance without the external antenna, but you have the option if necessary.
Aside: I am also intending to try a directional antenna, so I'd be interested in hearing about your experiences when you get that far.
