I know that I can use the ESP8266 to control switches, but can I use it to read data?

I want to use the ESP8266 as Wi-Fi shield that send data from Arduino Uno to a web page, is it possible or I will have to get a Wi-Fi shield?

Yes, you can use the ESP to read sensors.
