Newbie trying to connect nodeMCU board - can't communicate

Got the $8 nodeMCU board with the micrUSB connector and the silicon labs USB-UART bridge. I was able to download the proper USB driver (at least I think I did) and I can see the board is on COM5. In Arduino IDE when I upload Blinker sketch I see the board led light a few times but I get the upload failure in Arduino. Its a long error log but it basically shows trying to establish connection several times before giving up. In the Arduino serial terminal I tried some stuff but nothing happens. If I press the reset on the board I get garbage in the serial term window - so I think at least the 2 can talk.
Then I tried to connect ESP8266Flasher to it and it just hangs trying to connect - but the led on the board flashes while this is happening. I then found a nodeMCUFlasher and tried that - same thing. THEN....I got the EPLorer application and got the following:
PORT OPEN 9600
Communication with MCU..Got answer! Communication with MCU established.
AutoDetect firmware...
Can't autodetect firmware, because proper answer not received (may be unknown firmware).
Please, reset module or continue.
‚4üI’>û$4ü¢ÑÿSoft restart by user command
I'm on Windows 10 if that helps.
Any suggestions?
