Can't power device with USB cable....but ext. power works

Not sure what happened but I can no long power my ESP 12E with the microUSB port anymore. I can apply 5 volts to the VIN and GND terminals and it works fine. Afterwards, I can even upload sketches with the same USB cable....just no power.
Anyone seen this type of behavior before?

There are several possibilities.
One that is the most common is that cheap/crappy cable are not strong enough to support lot of current and have a lot of resistance, and therefore the 5V is then dropped near 4V at board.
Try to use a different cable ...
Which board are you using ? because there some board with voltage protect, maybe it has blowed up.
