Serial to Wifi Server Interface?

I am new to IOT. I have played with the Raspberry Pi and have Hass.io running for home automation. I have an Uno and a particle Photon for playing around. I also have a "legacy" piece of equipment that uses serial (DB9 port) to communicate with it. The old system I used has gone TU and I am replacing it all with Hass.io.
I would like some recommendations on how to get the serial device onto the local network via wifi so I could interface with it (via MQTT?) I see a lot of terms tossed around, but I am too new to understand most of them. And if someone mentions Python or JSON, my eyes roll over a bit. I am okay with Arduino IDE or ATOM.
Any help?
Thanks!
