Setting up google home mini/ echo dot and esp8266

What I'd like to do is to set up an esp8266 using arduino (since I'm somewhat familiar with this) to connect to a new home mini and/or echo dot I bought to play with. I have a headache trying to follow posts everywhere about how to do this. Can someone suggest or point me to a tutorial on how to :
Purchase the right hardware (ie. what kind of esp8266 and/or anything else) to purchase and how to set this up. I like the idea of using ITTT .
