Displaying dump/restart info..baud rate

Hi. I wonder if anybody can help me with this please?
When my esp does a restart, os I imagine dumps useful debug info to the serial port. I'm using a nodemcu v1. I see most of this, but the first few bytes are gibberish. I suspect this is because the serial port writes them at 76800 baud, before switching to the configured rate.
Is this right? And if it is, any suggestions on how to capture it? Datasheet for chip says it can do it,but my win7 pro driver doesn't give that rate as an option.
Any thoughts very gratefully received
