Status Display with eInk-Display and battery

Hello,
I do not have much experience of using ESP chips yet. I would like to implement the following:
A battery-operated ESP with an e-ink (ePaper) display, which receives data in fairly short time intervals via MQTT and displays them when changed.
This is the status if windows are open in the house. This information is already available via openHab.
When communicating I'm not sure if I should use WLAN or BLE. The latter is certainly battery-friendly. Only short texts should be displayed. However, the display should be quite up to date, as the display should be next to the front door and "warn" me before leaving.
I would be glad if you could just make me suggestions. Maybe someone of you has already done something similar. Maybe you also tell me that this project can not be done with batteries.
In the beginning I have already read a lot and found a few example projects. However, there was never the case that the display should be almost up to date! I do not know if this fact affects the hardware selection.
Many Thanks!
Edit: it Seouls enough if The Display Update The Status triggered ne a pir motion sensor. That should be possible, shouldnt it ?
