will this scheme work or I need to provide power to Motor Shield's 3V/5V and GND pins as well? I want to connect D1 with Shield using cables only and not stack them using all pins.

Try it out. When seated, all pins are connected. Other motorshields only have signal pins connected. Test if you need RST to be connected.

I think you should add the code you are using.
