ESP8266 Wifi Chain

Hi guys,
To explain my question, I drew 2 pictures.
As a electrician company we install solar farms.
For monitoring and data logging we use the rs485 interface in abb trio Inverters. What I'd like to do is, avoid using cables in the future an solve it with an esp8266 I'm each inverter.
Coz of may longer distances, I'd like the modules talk with each other and build a 'chain' instead of each individually connection to an access point.
I hope you guys can help me with finding an solution for this.
I placed already an Ordner for an Arduino Kit and 10 ESP8266 NodeMCU.
I choose the NodeMCU because of the 5V power supply which is already present in the Inverters.
How do I Start ?
