Structured Approach to Learning ESP8266 & NodeMCU

Hi,
I have been working with NodeMCU development kit for about a week now. After going through the tutorials and documents I have managed to read temperature and flame sensor readings and post them to an MQTT broker for data analytics purposes (my core skill set).
I feel that while I might be making progress, learning about programing language, it is still very unstructured. For instance, I am still struggling to get a typeahead method selection working on my IDE. Not sure which one I should be using as well.
Any suggestions how a newbie like me should approach things better?
Thanks,
