Ok, i am at my wits end. I have tried everything i can think of.

When i try uploading the sketch to my d1 mini lite i get the following error
warning: espcomm_sync failed
error: espcomm_open failed
error: espcomm_upload_mem failed
error: espcomm_upload_mem failed

I am using COM6
Upload speed 115200 (same as in device manager)
size 1M (512k SPIFFS)
CPU 80

I have followed a few different examples like this
https://wiki.wemos.cc/tutorials:get_sta ... in_arduino

though I cannot login and download the boards.txt file.

Somewhere i found this and added it to my boards.txt so it showed up.

I have tried the latest package and a few others from github.

I am not sure what else I can do. I hope somebody can point me in the right direction.

Close the IDE, disconnect the USB cable. Connect the cable to the Wemos. Connect the cable to the computer. Start the IDE. Select the COM port at 115200 and open the terminal window.

Press the reset button on the Wemos. What do you see in the Com window? It should be a line of medium length with various characters.

Change the baud rate at the bottom of the serial terminal to 74880. Now pres the reset button again. What dis it say?

If it didn't show anything then you probably don't have the right port or the port does not have a required driver.

Have you got the serial port to work with any other board or setup? Is this the first time you have worked with a board like this?
