Cannot get Blink to compile on IDE 1.8.7 on Linux, opensuse

Added the Board Manager for the ESP8266 and restarted the IDE. Loaded the Blink example, tried others, and this is the output:
ctags pattern is missing
Error compiling for board Generic ESP8266 Module.
I have no idea what is wrong now
