What can I do with this ESP8266 board as-bought-in-package?

I knew nothing about what these esp8266 boards were and didn't really think I needed to know what they were / how they worked. I bought what was advertised as a wifi-controlled relay from ebay, and it came as a small board with 8 pins that plugs into a relay board. I thought all I'd need to do was power it up, look for a new wifi access point, connect to it, hit it with a browser and then mess around with what-ever web-based GUI shows up.
I power it up, see a network called Farylink, connect to it, it's using 192.168.4.1, but it doesn't respond on port-80. I do a port-scan on 192.168.4.1 going through all 64k ports, but none are open. I scan for port 80 and 443 on the entire 192.168.4.x subnet, but only 2 IP's are active (the esp8266 and my pc). So what gives?
Are these things not usable "out of the box" ? What sort of firmware do these 8266 modules have when they are shipped from a Chinese vendor? Do I have to mess with the EN pin or the Reset pin? This board has what looks like a single LED, but it doesn't light up.
I have a USB to 5-volt serial thingy, but not a 3.3v thingy, so am I going to have to go hunt for some binary to flash this thing (and get the right thingy to do it) ? I shouldn't have to do this just to make this stupid relay work.
Tell me what the story is with these things.
