Why would there not be a use for hidden SSID in client mode?

Hi,
I set me VLAN to hidden mode on my AP a few days ago and a few hours later found out that my HUZZAH ESP8266 T/H sensors were not sending data to my OpenHab server any more. So, I had to make the SSID visible again.
I searched across this forum and found this post: https://www.esp8266.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3959&p=72834&hilit=hidden+ssid#p72834
I have two questions:
a) given we are now 2 years down the line, is this still applicable and does the ESP8266 now support a hidden SSID now?
b) in relation to the above quoted post, eriksl suggests that "there is not use for it". I don't quite understand why there would not be a use for it. For security purposes, I want to hide the SSID and not expose it to the neighbours.
Is there a work around?
Thanks
