I am planning to connect a Ultrasonic sensor , first time working with micro controllers ; i need the setup to be mobile so i need to power the controller through a battery or something ......

Is it possible to connect a battery to one of the vacant pins if so then how?

Which controller are you using? On some of them, you can input the voltage on the pins where they normally output if you're using the USB, be it 5v or 3.3v. Is there a reason why not to use the USB power? You can get some really small and very cheap batteries used for cellphone charging. I got lucky and found some on clearance at a hardware store for $1 each.
