I have the ESP-01 module handy and wanted to flash the lastest nodemcu firmware. I coundnt find a nodemcu_latest.bin or ESP8266Flasher.exe which was younger than 6 months. So I tried to build it on my own @ Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS x64 (with a stripped down set of modules - I guess that frees some space for the filesystem?). I have the following toolchain installed: https://github.com/pfalcon/esp-open-sdk (standalone) and its working well so far. The firmware builds and flashs via make flash well. But booting it up I get the following serial print out (75000 Bd):

Eventually the solution for me was pretty simple: Make sure you set the flash size in the Arduino IDE to 1Mbyte when you flash the ESP-01E. These are my complete settings for flashing the chip: generic module / 80 Mhz / QIO / 40 MHz / 1M (64kb) / 230400

So I opend an issue here: https://github.com/nodemcu/nodemcu-firm ... -134543646 and Aeprox suggested me some optional flash commands but nothing worked so far. Could you tell me the correct settings for my module (frequency, SPI mode)? The flash size is 4Mbit (by the markings on the flash chip: http://akizukidenshi.com/download/ds/sst/25051A.pdf). I also tried to flash with nodemcu's flasher but nothing made my esp's talk clearly to me. I even tried some builds from http://frightanic.com/nodemcu-custom-build/ but they didnt work either (similar results like above).

I hope you can help me make my modules work.

PS: somtimes the module seems to go into a high power mode after spitting out the message above where the power led gets dimm and the supply voltage goes down cos the device is drawing extreme current. I really dont know why this happens but it seems to be related to the flashed files and not the wiring.

Have you tried using the nodemcu flasher to rewrite the other parts of the flash memory? The INTERNAL://BLANK and INTERNAL://DEFAULT lines in the picture below?



Alternatively you could use esptool.py to flash these files too. They're included in the nodemcu /bin/ folder as blank.bin and esp_init_data_default.bin

The system param error indicates an error when reading the systems configuration from flash. (Someone more educated might shed more light on the precise error, but that's my quick'n'dirty diagnosis) Maybe your earlier attempts at flashing the firmware, without using the correct flash parameters, somehow rewrote this section of the flash. The default.bin file should fix that.

@ you PS; define extreme current? Above 600mA constant draw? Cause that would indicate a faulty module I think. What's your voltage regulator's current rating?

In your first post you mentioned someone else got theirs working with these settings ( 80 Mhz / QIO / 40 MHz / 1M (64kb) / 230400), but atm you're flashing in DIO SPI mode instead of QIO. Maybe give that a go if you haven't already?

The change in error output is a good sign I think. To my knowledge the "fatal exception" means an error while executing the firmware's C code, where-as the "system param error" meant the module didn't even reach the actual C code to begin with. I don't know how to solve that error, apart from trial-and-error, but I'm sure someone smarter than me will be able to figure it out.
