Boot Mode

I have been unable to get my board into the boot loader moad so I can load Arduino... I have followed the instructions, Arduino recognizes there is an unknown board attached, but when I hold and release the buttons nothing happens... The is a red LED lights up but never dims... Any suggestions? I have been trying everything I can think of with no results!
