I tried this and it sort of worked but I suggest you would be better off getting a USB-serial adapter. I had problems with data corruption using my Arduino. Sometimes it worked OK but it was flaky.
Alternatively you can buy something like a development board very cheaply and that has a CH340 USB-serial adapter built in and is still very cheap. Here is a link to one that is only £2.04 with free P&P http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Wire ... 17233.html.
