esp8266 wifi server

is there a way to check if a client is connected to the esp8266 ?
if i eg. set it up as a server and a client connects then activate something like a light ?
the idea is that at first i dont want an app. but if my phone is in range it would connect to the server and the activate something.
hope someone knows how
