Great video! I've created a custom board that programs the -01 in windows from the IDE without using the ESP python tool that you have to use. I have to press a button that shorts GPIO_0 to GND when programming though. Is that why you need to use the ESP python tool? You didn't say why you need it in your video.

Ah ok, so the Arduino IDE seems to be broken in OSX which is why you need to use the python esptool
The short from GPIO_0 to GND is nessasary, but is handled by the nodemcu dev board automatically.
For the ESP-01 / any other board, you would need to manually short the GPIO_0 and (on some boards) GPIO_15
