Access Point / Station Bit Rate

Does anyone know how to set the bit Rate of the Access point ?
I get random disconnects and the network stalling and thought as I send very small amounts of data / sec it might help to lower the bit rate to the lowest setting ( 5.5 MB/s ) it might stabilise the connection ?
Any ideas?
