has anyone tried using newlib with the esp8266/arduino ?

I was looking for stuff like strftime and trying to port it, but then I remembered newlib.
Igrr seems to have played with it at some point (see https://github.com/igrr/newlib-xtensa).
What is the status of such efforts ? Has anyone else tried such a combination ?
