measure distance between 2 ESPs?

Hey!
I asked myself if it is somehow possible to measure the distance bewteen 2 ESPs? Not very precise, but something very unspecfic like (nextto/10-20cm/20-50cm/1m or more.. Is RSSI precise enough?
Would this be possible if one ESP is connected to the router, the other one is an AP- while measuring the RSSI of both and sending it to a server?

Hi, if you look back someone did work on this but it used the signal strenght of 3 AP's to estimate the postion of the two ESPs and then calculated the distance between them.

Signal strength is difficult to use. Different modules will have different sensitivities. Orientation will have an significant effect. You can see differences but what those differences mean is kind of tough.

But having said that, Bluetooth LE is used to determine if someone is within a space for the module to send beacon messages to. I would look at how well that is supposed to work. Yes there are differences but it is the same frequency range so I would think it would be similar.

Better than ask yourself, do google search for this and maybe you find some ideas - for example this https://hackaday.io/project/4872-subpos ... ing-system
