Newbee Question about arduino sketch on ESP8266 and OTA

I have a project already running on a sanguino (MCP23017 - IO card). I would like to update my hardware to be able to do OTA updates. I have read few articles and i have a lot to read more!
My goal is to replace my old atmel chip with an ESP12 and be able to activate a AP (on demand) on the ESP just to do OTA update on a webpage. Is it possible as an quite new in arduino programming?
