Uploading to ESP8266 using Arduino as ISP

Hello,

Is it possible to upload sketches to the ESP in the arduino ide using the arduino as ISP option? My usb-TTL cable won't be arriving for a while and I wanted to try to get this to work. I tried using the arduino, specifying a generic ESP8266, programmer being Arduino as ISP, and tried the "upload using programmer" option in the ide, which was not successful (throws a java.lang.NullPointerException). Any workarounds, or do I need the adapter? Thanks in advance.

Have a look at the wiki on this page above you . Go to the Getting started 101 circuit . You can build the circuit with a 3.3 v regulator or use a 5 V supply and drop it through two diodes in series to get 1.2 volts off . The wiki circuit has resistors pull ups and pull downs but I don't use them and get good results . Just choose one chip and try . Not a big expense. gets the fun going hey!
