Problems with serial monitor since update to 1.6.8

I'm not sure whether that was when the problem began, but I cannot open the serial monitor window reliably anymore. At times (if I reboot the PC) it does open, but then again the next time it wont.
I am using a prolific USB to serial adapter, and I confirmed there is no problem with that; it shows up in the device manager (Win 7 32 bit), and also passes the loopback test.
Has anybody else experienced such an issue after updating to 1.6.8?
