I've got through the build process, and I thin the flash process, but I get no wifi signals.

I do get serial output. Below is a sample captured with minicom.
no  <stx> found, reconnect after 1s
reconnect
f 0,

Any clues?

Did you try a 'make blankflash'?

Also try to re-flash esp_init_data_default.bin
