Question about "time()"

I've noticed when powered up and asked for the time it's Thu Jan 01 00:00:00 1970
yet if you do the same again a little further down the program it gives the correct time.
I presume it gets of off the web somehow?
Can you tell us where from, how it gets it and how often it's updated?
Will the time stay valid if the internet connection is lost? ie does it have an RTC or will it only be valid if connected to the internet?
